I did some self portraits a couple of weeks ago for a friend's website. It's been a long time and I"m a little rusty on it...I like the blue one.

Hudson Valley Horrors

So for awhile now I've been working on painting a leather jacket for my sister who is on a Roller Derby team called the Hudson Valley Horrors. It's always fun to watch them play. Last week at their game they had a super hero themed night. I felt like I was at a comic convention. It was awesome. Anyways this jacket took forever because I wanted to make sure i got the image right. In the end I ended up using acrylic. Here has been my process.
The drawing, then a study. and then a photo of the jacket (sorry the photo isn't better).

Zombies...

Hi everyone. It's been awhile. I did this little zombie head after reading a set visit about the upcoming TV adaptation of walking dead which I'm super psyched about. I was experimenting with doing a tonal drawing with a ball point pen. I'd love to do a full piece like t his (don't really know if I'm capable of that just yet), but this is a start.

Follow the white rabbit

So my girlfriend had this series of Alice and wonderland inspired dreams that inspired me, so I tried to take one of them and put them down on paper. I don't know if I got close to how it was in her head, and my interpretation is probably a little darker, but I really like this piece. The idea was to make everything as natural as I could but then to play with the scale. It took a while to get the right perspective. I wanted it to feel like a subjective point of view where you were spying on the raabit. Also I wanted there to be a question as to whether the rabbit was really small or if the forest was really large. Hopefully that makes this feel surreal. I also abstracted the rabbit into a flat shape becuase that's how I saw him in my head and I tike the idea of flat, abstract shapes juxstaposed to fully renderedm round ones. I cheated a bit with the color of the mushrooms but it felt right with the palette. I'm thinking of making this one into a print.
It's a combination of watercolor, acrylic, ink and color pencil with some white conte for highlights.

A Grave Cover

So a good friend and fellow Caveman conspirator asked me if I would do a cover for a proposal to a future comic. I told him yes and figured "what the hell, I'll get it done in a week." Well that week turned into a couple of months. A lot of it was that I was working on my own comic and had some other projects, but on top of that I just couldn't get it right. I did the first cover and was really proud of it, but everytime I showed somebody that would have a hard time following the mad scientist vibe that was essential to the piece (for the record I still like it). So then I did a couple of patches to the foreground figure, and while it may have been clearer, it certainly wasn't good. I ended up redrawing and recoloring the whole thing and I think it turned out much better.

it's been awhile plus Roller Derby Girl

It's been awhile. Too long really. So here is what I've been up to:
I'm working on my own comic right now called "The Lake". I'm in the process
of lettering it and when it's done it'll be posted online for free as well as sold
at cons.
Also I did a bunch of web design work and will relaunch my website with new artwork
and a brand new look.
On top of that I'm doing a comic book cover for Cave Drawing Ink's own
Jeff Marvin (check out his movie blog Troy's Bucket). More on that soon.
And finally my awesome sister is playing in her first roller derby game this
weekend in Atlantic City. I'm super psyched and I'm painting the back of her
leather jacket. Above is the final sketch that will be transferred and painted in acrylic.
I'm proud of this one.

King Con

Hi everyone. So this weekend I went to King Con at the Brooklyn Lyceum. It's a new convention and I had a great time! Hopefully they'll do it again next year. It was an intimate con with a lot of undiscovered talent as well as some more seasoned pros. Everyone was really friendly and thank you to everyone who attended and who stopped by my table. Jeff Marvin from Troy's Buckets kept me company as we sold our two anthologies from Cave Drawing Ink, "Cycle's End" and "Rise of the Outlanders". I also debuted a new story I'm working on for Cave Drawing Ink. The big announcement from us was that starting on February 1st, 2010 we're launching Cave Drawing Ink Presents. It will be free, professional online content for your viewing pleasure. Each month an artist, writer, designer or painter will be given free reign to post whatever creation they wish to share with the rest of the world. We hope it'll catch on and you guys like it. The above image is a page that I'm working on for my contribution.
