Red Hot Halloween Flyer

Hi everyone. So I am TOTALLY Sucking at posting. My band was supposed to play a Halloween show but it got canceled. Needless to say I made the flyer before it go cancelled. Honestly it's a quick, simple one but I think it does it's job. I was happy about how my lettering came out.
Recently I've been doing a lot more drafts and using a lot more tracing paper in my drawing process. Anyways hope you guys like it. I'll try to be better about posting next week.

NY Comic Con

Hey everyone. So it's been awhile. I keep on telling myself that I have to kick myself in the ass and post more-as well as post some stuff on Deviant Art. It's always hard to figure out what to post. Anyways last week was NY Comic Con. I shared a table with Fred Haynes who's an awesome artist that all of you should check out. I was selling my book "Beside the Still Water" as well as some prints. It was a bit nerve-wracking before the con because this is the first time I've published my own book without anybody else from the Cave Drawing Ink Crew and it's the first time I've used my real name on a book. That said-it was an AMAZING experience that I would love to do again! Thank you to everyone who made their way to my table to look at artwork and talk, and to all the artists around me in artist alley who were all very talented and very giving of their time.
I'm posting a commission I did of Silver Surfer from the con that I liked. I swear I'll post more soon.

Frankenstein's Monster

So this is a piece I recently did for a proposal. I tried to follow Shelly's interpretation (although I do love Jack Pierce's version and couldn't even hope to compare or get close enough to Bernie Wrightson's.) So for this piece first I did a stuctural drawing toned it using payne's gray watercolor. From there I put a thin layer of gesso which wiped out all of the detail and then started using a mix of acrylic paint, graphite, whie conte and white out. Then finally I boosted the contrast in photoshop. Hope you guys like it.

I did some self portraits a couple of weeks ago for a friend's website. It's been a long time and I"m a little rusty on it...I like the blue one.

Hudson Valley Horrors

So for awhile now I've been working on painting a leather jacket for my sister who is on a Roller Derby team called the Hudson Valley Horrors. It's always fun to watch them play. Last week at their game they had a super hero themed night. I felt like I was at a comic convention. It was awesome. Anyways this jacket took forever because I wanted to make sure i got the image right. In the end I ended up using acrylic. Here has been my process.
The drawing, then a study. and then a photo of the jacket (sorry the photo isn't better).

Zombies...

Hi everyone. It's been awhile. I did this little zombie head after reading a set visit about the upcoming TV adaptation of walking dead which I'm super psyched about. I was experimenting with doing a tonal drawing with a ball point pen. I'd love to do a full piece like t his (don't really know if I'm capable of that just yet), but this is a start.

Follow the white rabbit

So my girlfriend had this series of Alice and wonderland inspired dreams that inspired me, so I tried to take one of them and put them down on paper. I don't know if I got close to how it was in her head, and my interpretation is probably a little darker, but I really like this piece. The idea was to make everything as natural as I could but then to play with the scale. It took a while to get the right perspective. I wanted it to feel like a subjective point of view where you were spying on the raabit. Also I wanted there to be a question as to whether the rabbit was really small or if the forest was really large. Hopefully that makes this feel surreal. I also abstracted the rabbit into a flat shape becuase that's how I saw him in my head and I tike the idea of flat, abstract shapes juxstaposed to fully renderedm round ones. I cheated a bit with the color of the mushrooms but it felt right with the palette. I'm thinking of making this one into a print.
It's a combination of watercolor, acrylic, ink and color pencil with some white conte for highlights.

A Grave Cover

So a good friend and fellow Caveman conspirator asked me if I would do a cover for a proposal to a future comic. I told him yes and figured "what the hell, I'll get it done in a week." Well that week turned into a couple of months. A lot of it was that I was working on my own comic and had some other projects, but on top of that I just couldn't get it right. I did the first cover and was really proud of it, but everytime I showed somebody that would have a hard time following the mad scientist vibe that was essential to the piece (for the record I still like it). So then I did a couple of patches to the foreground figure, and while it may have been clearer, it certainly wasn't good. I ended up redrawing and recoloring the whole thing and I think it turned out much better.

it's been awhile plus Roller Derby Girl

It's been awhile. Too long really. So here is what I've been up to:
I'm working on my own comic right now called "The Lake". I'm in the process
of lettering it and when it's done it'll be posted online for free as well as sold
at cons.
Also I did a bunch of web design work and will relaunch my website with new artwork
and a brand new look.
On top of that I'm doing a comic book cover for Cave Drawing Ink's own
Jeff Marvin (check out his movie blog Troy's Bucket). More on that soon.
And finally my awesome sister is playing in her first roller derby game this
weekend in Atlantic City. I'm super psyched and I'm painting the back of her
leather jacket. Above is the final sketch that will be transferred and painted in acrylic.
I'm proud of this one.
